What We Believe

Two simple precepts guide the community, followed by a commitment to peace, humility, and direct relationship with God.

1

Take the good from everything, and leave the bad.

We can learn from many Christian traditions, other religions, philosophies, and ways of thinking without believing that we must accept everything they teach.

Examples:
Take respect for scientific thought from Catholic intellectual tradition. What you see is what you get: whatever we observe in the universe is how God created it. For example, God used the Big Bang and evolution to create the universe and humankind.

Take pacifism from the Quakers.

Take the idea that every person can participate in spiritual life without a priestly class from the Quakers.

Take the Kalam cosmological argument from Islamic philosophy.

We should be willing to learn from anyone when an idea is good, compassionate, and reasonable.

2

Admit that you could always be wrong.

No human being has perfect knowledge. Faith should not require pretending to possess certainty that we do not have.

We therefore try to remain humble and willing to reconsider our beliefs when presented with better reasoning, stronger evidence, or a deeper understanding.

Good, evil, and purpose

We believe that there is objective good and evil. Good and evil are not merely matters of personal preference.

We also believe that every person has a purpose in life given by God. Part of spiritual life is seeking to understand that purpose and trying to live in accordance with what is good.

Equality under God

I am not a pope; everyone is equal under God. I am simply the founder.

Founding or organizing the community does not place anyone spiritually above anyone else. No person in the community has exclusive authority to speak for God.

Who is welcome

Anyone from any spiritual or non-spiritual path is welcome, as long as they are civil and are not trolls, spammers, or poop-posters.

People are welcome to ask sincere questions, disagree respectfully, and explore these ideas without pretending that everyone must already share the same beliefs.

Pacifism

A question pacifists are often asked is: “What if someone tries to kill your family?”

One response is that such extreme situations are not the normal experience of people simply because they choose pacifism.

Jesus taught that those who live by the sword will die by the sword. That raises another question worth considering: could refusing to live by the sword also reduce the violence we bring into our lives?

No religious idols

The community does not use crosses or similar religious objects as objects of worship. The focus remains on God, Jesus, their teachings, and the way we live.

Confession

Confession is made directly to God, as is common in many Protestant traditions. There is no requirement to confess sins to a priest or religious authority.

A person's confession, repentance, and relationship with God are ultimately between that person and God.

Faith, money, and our relationship with God

Faith is not something you have to buy

God does not need money, and you do not need to spend money to have a relationship with God. For that reason, we do not ask for or accept contributions.

We believe that hell is not literally a pit of fire. We understand hell as separation from God—the absence of a relationship with God.
